The Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching, and Service (CSJ) opened its doors in 2001. Our vision is collective liberation: a world in which we all live with dignity and determine our futures in just community. The CSJ transforms education and interrupts systems of oppression. Our work centers community knowledge, critical reflection, and the redistribution of resources.

Mission
To encourage Georgetown Graduate community to think about environmental issues from a historical perspective. Environmental history provides context essential to link past environmental transformations to present policies and future strategies for a sustainable life. Environmental history helps scholars, researchers, teachers, policy makers, business people make better informed decisions with lessons learned from the past.

Members have the opportunity to share and offer feedback on scholarship relating to the environment and history in the Georgetown academic community; form interdepartmental connections between graduate students across the university; and participate in events such as seminars and graduate student conferences.

First-Year Orientation to Community Involvement (FOCI) is an intensive pre-orientation program for incoming first-year and transfer students. FOCI serves as an introduction to community service, activism, and social justice issues in Washington, DC. FOCI participants actively engage in community service; discover and reflect on the diverse populations, perspectives, and roles that exist in the Georgetown and greater DC communities; develop leadership skills; and become part of a community committed to personal growth through service and reflection. FOCI activities address a wide variety of social justice issues, including education, sustainability, gentrification, immigration, LGBTQ access, and hunger and homelessness. The week involves lively discussions with Campus Ministry, faculty, student leaders, and DC community members.

Georgetown Renewable Energy and Environmental Network (GREEN) is the largest environmental student organization at Georgetown. We strive to promote the conservation, protection, and preservation of the environment through education, advocacy, volunteer work, and on-campus programs that engage students in being women and men for others and for the environment. Our goal is to create positive environmental impacts through active participation, so to benefit both Georgetown University and the community at large. We plan to achieve these goals by: promoting a clear understanding of humanity's dependence on and responsibilities to its environment; working to directly improve the environment through volunteer work; providing a forum for students interested in actively pursuing environmental goals; and encouraging advocacy through communication with our representatives via a series of venues. Our club has a number of teams devoted to different environmental issues (from environmental justice to gardening to energy and water consumption). As proud Hoyas and proud environmentalists, we encourage our peers to be persons for the environment as well as persons for others by connecting our peers to sustainability resources and a network of students with a common passion for the environment.

GreenUP is a graduate student green team. This group welcomes all members of the Georgetown community who are interested in fostering a sustainable lifestyle and preserving the environment. GreenUP strives to tackle difficult environmental challenges on the university campus. This team develops solutions using a design thinking approach and a combination of grassroots action as well as collaborative policy dialogue. GreenUP primarily serves to increase student understanding of environmental issues, encourage green lifestyles, and support the university in reaching its sustainability goals.

GU Analytics for Nonprofits is a graduate student group from Georgetown University that provides volunteer data analytics advisory services to nonprofit organizations. We are a group of civic-minded students who are passionate about contributing to social good with our technical and problem-solving skills. We aim to help nonprofit organizations develop analytics capabilities and make better data-informed decisions. In the meantime, we help our group members gain real-world experience in data analysis, improve technical and soft skills, and build professional networks.

The Hoya Hub food pantry is a resource for any member of the Georgetown University community experiencing food insecurity. It is a pantry stocked with non-perishable food items, available to anyone who needs food on an immediate, emergency basis. No Hoya should go hungry; the Hoya Hub is a place to pick up nutritious food to cover short breaks or other unplanned gaps in access to meals.

Together, Georgetown University's Office of Government Relations and Community Engagement (GRACE), Office of Student Employment, and Center for Social Justice announce a pilot program through which Federal Work Study (FWS)-eligible Georgetown University undergraduate students can intern with DC-based community organizations whose leaders have been recognized by the University's annual John Thompson, Jr. Legacy of a Dream Award.

When supporting a Legacy of a Dream (LoaD) Awardee Organization, LoaD Interns use their skills, time, energy, and capacities to support organization as needed and requested. While actual duties vary with each agency placement, the goal is for each Hoya to contribute to the agency's capacity with their contributions, support, and learning. LoaD interns are expected to be excellent representatives to Georgetown's commitment to social justice and follow all Student Conduct policies, both on and off campus. The SFS Graduate Chapter of Net Impact is a platform and resource hub for young leaders seeking opportunities to apply business management principles to their work in the public sector. Originally a network of business students and professionals who desired to add a social sector element to their work, Net Impact has grown into an interdisciplinary network bringing together business, design thinking, and start-up exercises to drive social and environmental change. At SFS, global engagement and social justice are attributes built into our academic DNA. Why not sharpen those skills and insights with business principles that may enhance the future work and change we aim to drive throughout meaningful careers. As the SFS Graduate Net Impact Chapter grows its membership, it wants to offer a trove of resources to students wishing to learn the nuts and bolts of the private sector's role in foreign policy/development, identify the locus of activity around CSR in the greater DC metropolitan area and beyond, and identify networks of forward-thinking leaders who see tremendous value in adding a youthful voice to ongoing processes of social change. Slow Food aims to broaden the Georgetown student body's awareness of the importance of universal access to food that is good, clean, and fair. To us, good food is made with love and the intent to build community and bring sustenance; clean food is produced with respect for the environment and the health of those who consume it; and fair food is recognized as the result of the labor of many who deserve just compensation and equal access to food themselves, and recognizing and standing up to the violence that often accompanies food production. We seek to create a space on campus for students to come together to cultivate a better food system on campus and beyond.

Slow Food Georgetown acknowledges the vast inequities built into our food systems, and we seek to change that by 1) educating students about their food; 2) working on and off campus to reduce these inequities; and 3) empowering students to change the food system. As an official Slow Food USA chapter, we work within their Manifesto for Equity, Inclusion and Justice.

The Georgetown University Social Innovation and Public Service (SIPS) Fund is a $1.5 million student-run fund that allocates approximately $60,000 in award money every year to help students and alumni start their own social ventures. The mission of SIPS grows out of the Jesuit tradition of service to others.

Some of the past projects funded by SIPS include funding the Alternative Break Program (ABP), creating a book that offers representation for chronically hospitalized children, and backing a startup which decreased food waste by sustainably creating cold-pressed juices. Through its Summer Scholars program, SIPS has also financed proposals which have done important work such as improving cooking practices in Rwanda by bringing stoves to communities and tracking their usage, introducing a community garden in N.E. DC, and holding a theater workshop in France to help facilitate dialogue between French and refugee people living in Paris. Our approach to student programs at the Berkley Center is grounded in the Jesuit value of caring for the whole person (cura personalis), a central tenet of the Georgetown University education.
