Alpha Phi Omega (APO) is Georgetown's all-gender service & social justice fraternity supported by the Center for Social Justice. Through our 12-project service program, we participate in direct, impactful, consistent service alongside Washington D.C. community members and each other. We are committed to advancing justice in DC. The Brain Exercise Initiative travels to local nursing homes to do simple math, trivia, and reading-aloud exercises with residents which have been shown to decrease the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease and other forms of memory loss. C3 is a group that partners with the Lombardi Cancer Center in our activities and mission. We organize, run, and participate in fundraisers for the clinic and for pediatric cancer research, including a Holiday 5km run, Valentine-O-grams, and bake sales. Money raised from these events goes towards the Lombardi Center and new events for the kids. C3 gives its members an opportunity to get involved in different aspects of the organization and allows them to devote as much time as they are able to their particular areas of interest.

Our mission at SweetStrips is to reduce the disparity of type 2 diabetes in D.C. Currently, diabetes affects over 30 million individuals in the United States and over 60,000 in DC alone. Since 1984 we have seen a 384% increase in diagnosis of diabetes, a large part of this increase has been due to changes in our diets and exercise.

SweetStrips hopes to combat this increase by spreading awareness of proper nutrition and exercise. We believe that healthy practices are best formed and retained from an early age. Utilizing a Center for Disease Control guideline for healthy living and diabetes prevention, we have designed a curriculum that incorporates its essential elements into a fun and interactive series of lessons for children in elementary school. We hope to work with your students and together create a healthier future for DC.

GlobeMed is a network of university students that partners with grassroots organizations around the world to improve the health of people living in poverty. GlobeMed has chapters at many universities throughout the United States. GlobeMed at Georgetown has partnered with Primeros Pasos, a clinic in rural Guatemala that serves the local community, for over 10 years. We have weekly meetings to discuss global health issues and fundraise for the clinic throughout the year. In today's pandemic, the inequities in health are evident and we are focused on educating ourselves and advocating for the right to healthcare. Everyone is welcome to join GlobeMed at Georgetown. Heroes for Hearts aims to increase the rate of bystander CPR performed by an individual at the scene of a heart attack or stroke, in an effort to save lives. Our motto is, "20 minutes. Let's Save a Life." Taking just 20 minutes out of a single day can provide an individual with the skills, training, and knowledge to potentially save someone's life.

As part of Georgetown's Center for Social Justice, HOPE strives to serve the Georgetown community by facilitating opportunities for student community involvement. Our mission focuses on assisting the sizable community experiencing poverty and homelessness within the District of Columbia, although we currently run and are open to continuing initiatives embracing any aspect of community outreach.
A second component of our mission is to educate the Georgetown Student Body on the issues of poverty and homelessness, both within the District of Columbia and on a larger scale. Through our outreach programs and awareness campaigns, we aspire to share the idea that service to those in our community who are experiencing poverty and homelessness is not only an act of necessity, but an act of humanity and an act of love.ÔÇ®

Hoya Helpers tutors 6th and 7th graders at Hardy Middle School, located across from Safeway on Wisconsin, in both math and English. We offer tutoring every week, five days a week, and each tutor signs up for at least one one-hour shift that recurs weekly. Our large tutoring sessions occur twice a week from 3:30-4:30, and we also provide tutoring throughout the school day. Tutors work one-on-one with struggling students to help them complete their homework and learn basic skills. We do not create lesson plans of our own, but instead supplement and clarify the information they are already learning from their teachers. As these are some of the few remaining years that students have left before 9th grade, we see it as a crucial period in which students have a chance to catch up and get back on track before high school.

Hoya Knits is committed to giving back to the larger DC community through donations of handmade baby and children’s hats that are knit by our very own Georgetown community. This organization provides students with the opportunity to learn knitting skills in a collaborative, low-stress environment and the space to relieve stress and anxiety in a productive and enjoyable manner. These handmade hats are then donated to various hospitals and shelters in the DC area.

Hoya Taxa is a student volunteer organization that promotes financial literacy and assists lower-income D.C. families with their taxes. Each year, club members are trained to receive IRS certification as volunteer tax preparers, then travel to clinics in the D.C. area to help clients file their tax returns. Hoya Taxa, which operates through the Center for Social Justice, is partnered with Community Tax Aid D.C., the non-profit that operates these tax clinics and offers free income tax preparation services.

Our mission as a chapter on the Georgetown campus is to improve and celebrate menstrual hygiene through advocacy and service. Through advocacy, our mission is to promote menstrual hygiene as a right, and to challenge the stigma surrounding the topic of periods. In addition, we hope to educate and spread awareness about issues surrounding feminine hygiene through conversations and campaigns. Lastly, through service, our mission is to distribute menstrual hygiene products to women and girls in need in the DC area. Project Sunshine Georgetown provides free recreational, educational and social service programming to children facing medical challenges and their families. Our volunteers donate their time to create and deliver programs to pediatric patients at the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. We also hold craft kit making sessions and fundraising for the national Project Sunshine organization. Our goal is to relieve the anxiety of the young patients and create an environment of positivity and fun while they are receiving care.

Slow Food aims to broaden the Georgetown student body's awareness of the importance of universal access to food that is good, clean, and fair. To us, good food is made with love and the intent to build community and bring sustenance; clean food is produced with respect for the environment and the health of those who consume it; and fair food is recognized as the result of the labor of many who deserve just compensation and equal access to food themselves, and recognizing and standing up to the violence that often accompanies food production. We seek to create a space on campus for students to come together to cultivate a better food system on campus and beyond.

Slow Food Georgetown acknowledges the vast inequities built into our food systems, and we seek to change that by 1) educating students about their food; 2) working on and off campus to reduce these inequities; and 3) empowering students to change the food system. As an official Slow Food USA chapter, we work within their Manifesto for Equity, Inclusion and Justice.

Our mission is to organize accessible swim instruction specifically designed for children with special needs in the greater DC community. The swim lessons aim to prevent accidental drowning, which is among the leading causes of death for children with intellectual disabilities. In addition to promoting water safety, SNUGS at Georgetown will create an inclusive social environment for the children and allow them to build meaningful relationships.

Our greater objectives are to cultivate awareness of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and to mitigate them through engagement and education in order to advance social justice.

Founded in 2001, UNICEF-Georgetown is a student organization under the umbrella of Georgetown's Center for Social Justice (CSJ). We support the goals of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) through fundraising and bringing initiatives such as Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, the International Children's Development Conference, UNICEF-Teach, and marketing campaigns to the Georgetown campus. We also take Georgetown students off-campus to advocate on Capitol Hill and volunteer in the greater D.C. area. On a monthly or bi-weekly basis, we host bonding events and fundraisers for members and non-members to together celebrate our mission: EDUCATE, ADVOCATE, and FUNDRAISE for children.
